Care and Use

Gold-Filled Jewelry

Gold-filled jewelry is made through a process of bonding two sheets of solid karat gold to a core of brass. It covers the brass core with 5% of the total weight in solid gold, which makes it less likely to tarnish and extremely durable. Gold filled jewelry is more durable than gold-plated, and more affordable than solid gold. It is known as the “best of both worlds,” as it offers both quality and affordability. Here at Grow in Grace, we only use gold-filled materials for our gold pieces.

Gold-filled pieces can last a lifetime with proper care and are a popular choice for everyday wear because of their quality and longevity. However, it is important to note that gold-filled jewelry can tarnish and/or leave a dark mark on the skin. The dark mark is harmless and is caused by abrasion, substances on the skin, and/or the friction caused by the metal rubbing against the skin. There are a few specific things that can lead to discoloration:

1) a person’s body chemistry (pH levels, sweat characteristics, skin acidity),

2) frequent contact with moisture (water, salt-water, sweat, humidity, etc),

3) friction caused by your piece rubbing against the skin,

4) exposure to substances like cosmetics, perfumes, lotions, cleaning products, and other chemicals,

5) moisture being caught in the grooves and patterns of detailed chains, and

5) wearing jewelry with clasps like it is permanent jewelry.

Storing your jewelry in dry areas and drying thoroughly with a soft cloth after exposure to moisture and substances can help prolong the life of your pieces. See our tips below to help your jewelry last for years to come.

Gold-Filled Care Instructions

  1. Wipe your jewelry after each use with a soft cloth.
  2. Store in clean, dry area.
  3. Limit exposure to moisture, salt-water, chlorine, soaps, cosmetics, chemicals, etc.
  4. Do not wear jewelry swimming.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is a metal that is made of 92.5% silver and 7.5% metal alloys, like copper. Because of the nature of metal, Sterling Silver will darken over time. While it does tarnish easier than gold-filled, sterling silver is still a popular choice for everyday wear because of its durability and beauty. Here are some tips to prolong the shine of your Sterling Silver pieces.

Sterling Silver Care Instructions

1. Wipe your jewelry after each use with a soft cloth.
2. Store in clean, dry, dark, and airtight bag between uses.
